Celebrating Leadership, Community, and Possibility: Dr. Charles Osuji Named CRIEC’s 2026 Mentor of the Year

In every community, there are individuals whose dedication to lifting others becomes a catalyst for real and lasting change. Dr. Charles Osuji, LL.D., C.Dir.—CEO and Managing Counsel of Osuji & Smith Lawyers and one of the most recognized Calgary lawyers in Alberta—is one of those rare leaders whose influence reaches far beyond his legal accomplishments. His journey continues to inspire immigrant professionals, newcomers to Canada, and internationally trained lawyers seeking their place in a new professional landscape.

On March 26, 2026, the Calgary Region Immigrant Employment Council (CRIEC) honoured Dr. Osuji with its prestigious Mentor of the Year Award. This recognition reflects more than his professional success; it celebrates his ongoing commitment to mentorship, inclusion, and guiding immigrant professionals as they build meaningful futures in Canada.

Dr. Osuji’s story began much like the stories of many newcomers—filled with resilience, determination, and unwavering belief in possibility. Called to the bar in both Nigeria and Alberta, he rebuilt his legal career from the ground up, eventually rising to lead one of Canada’s fastest-growing and most diverse law firms. Today, Osuji & Smith Lawyers serves clients across Canada and internationally, specializing in employment law, litigation, family law, and business law. His work has earned national recognition, including being named among Canada’s Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers and receiving the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal for his contributions to Alberta.

Yet, it is his commitment to giving back that truly defines his leadership. Having personally experienced the challenges faced by internationally trained lawyers in Canada, he founded the Foot in the Door Initiative (FIDI)—a mentorship and training program that has supported more than 500 professionals in gaining meaningful legal opportunities. His involvement with CRIEC has further expanded this impact, allowing him to meet newcomers exactly where they are and help them navigate unfamiliar systems with confidence.

This is why CRIEC’s Mentor of the Year Award is such a fitting tribute. Those who have worked with him consistently describe him as generous with his time, deeply empathetic, and a leader who lifts as he climbs. He is known for seeing potential in others long before they see it in themselves, giving them the guidance, encouragement, and tools needed to succeed in Canada’s legal landscape.

At the heart of his mentorship philosophy is a simple, powerful belief: no capable professional should be left behind. Through his leadership, advocacy, and community involvement, he continues to build pathways for newcomers to thrive, shaping the future of Alberta’s legal profession and strengthening Canada’s broader workforce.

As CRIEC recognizes Dr. Charles Osuji as the 2026 Mentor of the Year, we celebrate not only his accomplishments but the countless lives transformed through his mentorship. His journey is a powerful reminder of the importance of community, representation, and inclusive leadership and the lasting legacy created when one person chooses to open doors for others.
